INSPIRATION
Janaki Necklace – named after Janaki Ammal, who instead of being wed in 1910s India, choose to pursue education, attaining a bachelor’s degree from Queen Mary’s College, Madras and an honours degree in botany from Presidency College. At her time at the University of Michigan she earned a Masters of Science and a doctorate in botany. Among her many outstanding achievements, her work in developing hybrid sugarcane varieties enabled India to sustain their own superior crops, rather than having a dependency on imports. In so many ways, she stands as an exemplary role model.
