INSPIRATION
The Marie Necklace – named after Marie Clark Taylor, an amazing role model who turned her passion for botany into the pioneering achievement of being the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. in Botany. She also served in the Army Red Cross during World War II. After the war, she returned to Howard University and progressed from assistant botany professor, to holding the position of Chair of the Botany Department for 29 years! Her hands on, relatable techniques for teaching science to students were acknowledged by President Johnson for the impact left on both teachers and students.
